Energy Advantages

In today's economic climate, it's critical to improve energy efficiency and find better ways to utilize our natural resources. New Mexico is an 'energy state,' with programs relating to the development and use of hydrogen power, as well as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass resources.

The state offers a host of opportunities and incentives to energy-related companies, including commercialization programs between our two national labs and private industry that facilitate technology transfer, and a growing number of research parks and incubators.

Research Affiliations

Center for Global Environmental Technologies - University of New Mexico; Develops new technologies and engineering approaches to solve problems related to stratospheric ozone depletion and global warming.
Earth Data Analysis Center - University of New Mexico; Provides services in geospatial data technologies.
Hydrogen Technology Partnership (HyTep) - Albuquerque; HyTeP's vision is New Mexico Leadership in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. New Mexico will develop the first hydrogen economy in the United States.
Laboratory Partnerships With Small Business - Enables Sandia National Labs to provide $5,000 of technical assistance in urban areas and $10,000 in rural areas to small businesses.

Locally-grown bio-based companies that more than doubled their employment and increased their revenues by 50% in the last three years include:

Affordable Solar Group LLC - Designs and distributes solar electric and wind systems.
Sacred Power, Inc. - A Native American-owned renewable energy company, Sacred Power recently received a $1.9 million federal grant to bring electricity to parts of the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona.

Albuquerque

AAA Solar Supply Inc. - Manufactures solar air collectors and heat exchangers.
Advent Solar - Advent's products are based on an advanced proprietary solar cell design that Advent licensed exclusively from Sandia National Labs. The company recently secured $30 million in Series C funding to build and operate a 25 megawatt plant located in Mesa del Sol, a new 12,000-acre development and solar cluster in southwest Albuquerque.
Array Technologies - Manufactures solar electric trackers and control systems.
Direct Power and Water - Manufactures mounting racks; installs photovoltaics and system integration.
Emcore - A manufacturer of satellite solar cells, Emcore is committed to minimizing the impact on the environment. The company closed its California solar panel assembly plant to consolidate work in a state-of-the-art facility here. In late 2006, Emcore decided to relocate its headquarters from NJ to Albuquerque and expand its plant in the Sandia Science and Technology Park. It will add 50-80 jobs in 2007.
